The Englishman took the championship in dramatic fashion at the Yas Marina Circuit after winning the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

He lined up on the grid for the race in second place and with a 17-point lead over his rival. The 29-year-old had a strong start to enter the first corner in the lead of the race and maintained the gap to Rosberg in the opening two stints.

However, the championship runner-up suffered an ERS failure and reported that he was losing power mid-way through the race. He quickly dropped back and despite his best efforts, he could only take the chequered flag in 14th place.

Up front, Hamilton had it all under control, with Felipe Massa's late charge on the super-soft tyre fading. He crossed the finish line at the end of lap 55 to take his 11th win of the season and to officially secure his second title.

Hamilton is now the first British multiple world champion since Jackie Stewart in 1973. Mercedes wrapped up the constructors' title in Russia after dominating the 2014 season.
