It was a mixed day for the eight teams taking part. McLaren and Mercedes suffered reliability woes, while the likes of Sauber and Williams completed plenty of running.

Force India remained in Barcelona, but did not run on day one of the third test. Its 2015 car is due to arrive at the track on Friday morning and the team hopes to debut the VJM08 in the afternoon.

Kimi Raikkonen and Marcus Ericsson were the first to take to the track for the morning session. After just 10 minutes of running, the red flag emerged after Daniil Kvyat stopped his Red Bull RB11 at the pit exit.

However, the session quickly resumed, with Raikkonen putting in the opening timed lap - a 1:32.451. He continued to improve, before being displaced by Lewis Hamilton. The Englishman set a 1:26.437 on the hard tyre, before switching to the mediums and going 1.9 seconds clear of the field with a 1:24.881.

He ended the morning session fastest, also completing the most laps - 48. Felipe Massa was the first driver to return to the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, with the Williams driver completing some longer runs.

McLaren was forced to call it a day 50 minutes into the afternoon, thanks to a hydraulic leak. Jenson Button managed just seven laps in total and one timed attempt - a 1:31.479. Following a long stint in the garage, Romain Grosjean re-appeared to continue his Thursday programme.

The red flag emerged one hour and 10 minutes into the session after Carlos Sainz Jr stopped on track at turn 10. Once running resumed, Massa jumped to the front on the medium tyre compound with a 1:24.687. He then switched to the softs and put in a 1:23.500, ending the day with the quickest time.

The Brazilian completed 103 laps, 19 fewer than Ericsson. The Sauber driver managed the most laps of anyone and a late improvement on the super-soft tyre saw him move up to second place, dropping Hamilton to third.

The 2014 champion failed to re-appear in the afternoon due to an MGU-K failure. Kvyat was fourth for Red Bull, completing 75 laps - as did Grosjean, who finished fifth on the timesheets. Raikkonen was sixth for Ferrari after a productive but quiet day.

Despite causing a red flag in the afternoon, Sainz Jr was able to quickly return to the track and boost his lap tally to 86. He was seventh fastest, well clear of Button's only timed attempt.
