Vettel says Spa strategy was never risky

Sebastian Vettel has defended Ferrari’s decision to put him on a one-stop strategy at the Belgian Grand Prix, saying it was "never risky".

The German rose to third place in the closing stages, as rival drivers pitted, and was holding off Romain Grosjean’s Lotus when his right-rear tyre failed on the penultimate lap.

He was fuming after the race and branded Pirelli’s tyres "unacceptable". F1’s tyre supplier then responded by saying stint guidelines shared to teams in late 2013 were ignored

Vettel posted a statement on his official website defending Ferrari and saying the Maranello-based outfit’s decision has his full support.

"Just to make things clear: the team and I decided our strategy for the race together," the four-time world champion said.

"I support the team and the team supports me. And this is what makes us a team.

"Our strategy was never risky, at any point. The team is not to blame."
